Sunrise or Sunset at SPI
Welcome to the page that I have created to help my lovely clients choose whether they schedule their session at sunrise or sunset! Both offer breathtaking ocean views, beautiful light, and the opportunity to create timeless portraits, but each has its own unique look and feel.
Sunrise sessions are soft, romantic, and backlit as the sun rises over the Gulf, creating a light and airy aesthetic. Sunset sessions often feature deeper blue tones, colorful evening skies, and a mix of dune and beach scenery, with many of our favorite waterfront portraits captured just after the sun dips below the horizon.
Of course, every session is a little different. Weather, cloud cover, and the season all influence the colors and light, making each gallery uniquely beautiful. Browse the examples below to see the distinct feel of both sunrise and sunset sessions and choose the one that best matches your vision.
SUNRISE Sessions
If you're dreaming of a peaceful, romantic beach experience, sunrise may be the perfect choice. Early mornings at South Padre Island are incredibly serene, with quiet beaches, gentle waves, and very few people around. It's an ideal time for couples and families who want a more intimate setting without the crowds.
One of the biggest advantages of sunrise is the beautiful backlighting from the rising sun over the Gulf. This soft, flattering light creates a bright, airy look with a dreamy glow that photographs beautifully throughout the entire session. The calm atmosphere also makes it easy to slow down, relax, and simply enjoy your time together.
Why clients love sunrise sessions:
Quiet beaches with very few people around
A peaceful, relaxed atmosphere
Soft, romantic light from sunrise over the ocean
Beautiful backlit portraits throughout the session
Bright, airy images with a timeless feel
SUNSET Sessions
Sunset sessions offer a completely different kind of beauty. We typically begin in the dunes, where the lush green vines create a gorgeous natural backdrop before making our way to the shoreline as the evening unfolds. As the sun sets, the sky and water often take on rich blue tones, and if conditions are right, we're treated to colorful skies after sunset for some truly stunning beach portraits.
Because the sun is lower in the sky, the first part of the session can include more direct sunlight. This creates brighter highlights and stronger contrast on the skin—a look that many clients love for its warmth and vibrancy. If you don't mind a little sun on your face, it can produce beautiful, dynamic images before we transition into the softer evening light.
Why clients love sunset sessions:
Beautiful portraits in the dunes surrounded by lush green vines
Rich blue tones in the sky and water
The chance for colorful skies after sunset
A variety of landscapes in one session
Warm, sunlit images that transition into soft evening light
